Williamsburg Flower Arrangement

The key elements in Williamsburg Floral Arrangements are that the shape is that of a mound, flower heights are varied and the filler flowers add mass.

A tight mass of flowers placed close to the container is typical of a Williamsburg arrangement. You can always open up the form by placing some flowers away from the bunch. Traditionally the flowers used in such arrangement are coxcomb, strawflowers, starflowers, purple statice, bunny tails, and German statice.

Using coxcomb, set your lines for the arrangement. Insert one stem into the foam in a 12 o clock position and then repeat in 3, 6, 9 o clock positions on the foam. Then insert focal flowers like strawflowers into a round, tight shape. In modern arrangements you can vary the length of the flowers rather than keeping to the same height.

Now add small bunches of German statice to act as fillers. Soak the statice in warm water because this will make them more open and pliable and you will find it easier to use them to cover mechanics of the design. Make a circle of statice, and work on the inside of the arrangement.

Now towards the inside fill in some more strawflowers so that the mass gets fuller. Keep to the mound shape and insert more strawflowers tightly into the design. Now add purple statice for color and insert it in a way that it stands out. Use wire picks to gather the starflowers and insert them into the arrangement at random to break any monotony. Bunny tails may be used to make lines.

A similar Williamsburg arrangement can be made in the triangular shape making use of berries and pine cones.
